Child safety is an understandable concern for any parent or other person who is caring for or responsible for the care and wellbeing of a child or children. This care for the welfare of children in most societies extends beyond the care for one’s own children into a care for children in general. This reflects the recognition that children are in general likely to be more vulnerable than adults and as such less able to take care of themselves.
However, protecting children has to tread a careful path between on the one hand wrapping children in ‘cotton wool’ and allowing children to take acceptable risks and explore their relationship with the world through adventurous play or other activities.
To maintain a balance between protectiveness and encouraging independence there are many things that parents/carers can do to minimise the risks to children while promoting independence and autonomy. Small changes around your home and to everyday routines can help to reduce the risk of children being killed, disabled or disfigured in preventable accidents.
