Hospitals

With the exception of accident and emergency treatment and specialist clinics such as those for STD (sexually transmitted diseases) individuals requiring access to hospital services will need to be referred by a GP. Whilst the majority of treatment is free there is variation in the availability of certain treatments in different areas, depending on the priority given to that particular condition in your location.

Waiting times

Waiting lists for a particular condition can vary from area to area and you can ask your GP to investigate other locations that can treat your condition sooner. Greater emphasis is being placed on the availability of information on waiting times; a search facility for hospitals in England and information on waiting times can be found on http://www.nhs.uk/. This is part of the NHS Gateway website that also offers similar search facilities covering Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland via the relevant links.
