Keeping healthy

Healthy eating is about getting the right amounts of vitamins, minerals, protein and carbohydrates, as well as the right types of fats and sugars.

Making sure that you’re eating the right balance of the right foods is the key to a healthy diet.

To make sure that you’re eating a balanced diet:

  • eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day, including servings of fruit juice and baked beans
  • base your meals on starchy foods like potatoes, brown rice and wholemeal bread
  • if you eat meat every day of the week, try substituting it with oily fish like mackerel, salmon or tuna on a couple of days
  • always go for low-fat cheese, milk and yoghurt
  • try and cut down the number of high fat or high sugar snacks and drinks you have every week.

You should also keep an eye on how much salt you’re eating. As most salt we eat comes from processed foods, make sure you read the label. Avoid snacks or meals containing more than 1.25 grams of salt per 100g. It’s also a good idea to get out of the habit of adding salt to food when you’re cooking or at the table. Do you really notice a difference if it’s missing?

Improving your fitness

By spending 30 minutes a day on physical exercise, you will feel the benefits very quickly because exercise helps to:

  • increase your energy levels
  • control your weight
  • reduce stress
  • improve sleep patterns

If you keep up your exercise routine as a regular and long-term feature of your life then your risk of developing major health problems like heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, high blood pressure and many other conditions is reduced.

General Wellbeing

It would be unrealistic to think that we can fully eliminate stress or anxiety from our lives, but we can learn to manage and reduce it.

If you feel your stress levels are too high and affecting your enjoyment of life you may want to access counselling or a stress management course.

Maintaining good links with family and friends, having interests and hobbies together with a healthy self-respect and knowing how to express yourself and your needs will help you to stay mentally fit.
