Preparing for a family

Thinking of starting a family? It is sensible to think about your own health and fitness before becoming pregnant. Here are a few simple tips.

  • It is a good idea to try to be as close as possible to your ideal weight.
  • Make sure that any health problems you have are sorted out before you conceive.
  • Avoiding smoking and cutting down to a sensible amount of alcohol a week is advisable.
  • The only supplement that should be taken prior to conceiving (and up to the 12th week of pregnancy) is Folic Acid 400 micrograms daily. This helps to prevent developmental problems like Spina bifida.

General pointers include:

  • Eating a varied diet with plenty of fresh fruit & vegetables, cereal, pasta, rice and potatoes, and a small amount of chicken and fish, is the best approach.
  • Try to avoid pre-packaged foods as they usually contain excessive amounts of fat and salt.
  • Cut down on biscuits, cakes, and crisps, making sure you have plenty of healthy alternatives around for vulnerable times.
  • Increasing the amount of exercise that you take will be good for you both physically and mentally. Brisk walking, swimming and yoga are exercises that you can continue right through a pregnancy, and a combination of these would be ideal.
