An unpaid carer is someone who provides unpaid support to a partner, family member or friend who may have a disability, illness, mental health condition, addiction or who requires general support in life. It may range from a few hours a week to something that’s 24/7.
The most recent Census in 2021 puts the estimated number of unpaid carers at 5 million in England and Wales. Carers UK state that these figures, together with ONS Census data for Scotland and Northern Ireland, suggest that the number of unpaid carers across the UK is 5.7 million – although a report by Carers UK in 2022 found this figure was more likely around 10.6 million. Research also shows that one in seven carers in the UK are juggling work and care.
